NEED TO KNOW

  • Olympia Provisions' ready-to-eat (RTE) holiday kielbasa has been recalled by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS)
  • Approximately 1,930 pounds of the kielbasa were impacted.
  • The FSIS urges consumers not to consume the product and to either throw it out or return it to the store of purchase

Approximately 1,930 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) holiday kielbasa produced by Olympia Provisions have been recalled due to possible metal contamination.

On Dec. 18, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the recall, following a reported customer complaint.

The affected kielbasa was produced on Oct. 14 and shipped to retail locations in Washington, Oregon and California. It was also available nationwide for purchase online.

Given the 2-month-long delay between production and recall, the FSIS is concerned that customers have the contaminated product stored in their freezers. They urge consumers to look for the establishment number "EST. 39928" and to either throw the sausage out or return it to the store of purchase.

The specific product of concern is the 16-oz. vacuum-sealed plastic package containing one, fully cooked "Olympia Provisions Uncured Holiday Kielbasa" with the "best if used by" date of "02/19/26." Images of the product can be found here.

The contamination was first brought to the FSIS's attention after Olympia Provisions received a consumer complaint. The consumer claimed they found metal in their RTE holiday kielbasa. Fortunately, they were not harmed and no consumers have reported injuries since. The FSIS advises all consumers to seek medical attention if any food-related injuries occur.

The FSIS has classified the RTE holiday kielbasa contamination as Class I, meaning the risk level is high. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), "a Class I recall involves a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death." Classes are established by an FSIS Event Assessment Committee.

Olympia Provisions is an American charcuterie company based in Portland, Oregon. They have multiple restaurant locations throughout Portland, and sell their products nationwide online, as well as in specialty retailers and major grocers like Whole Foods. In the past, Olympia Provisions has been subject to two other Class I recalls — one for their RTE pork deli meat and another for their RTE pork sausage.
