An Arizona sheriff investigating the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie is not ruling out the possibility that more than one suspect may have been involved.
Nancy, 84, was last seen on Jan. 31 and authorities believe she was kidnapped in the middle of the night on Feb. 1 by an armed man seen in surveillance footage appearing to tamper with Nancy's doorbell camera.
That unidentified person has been described by the FBI as a "male, approximately 5’9” - 5’10” tall, with an average build." In the footage, the person is wearing a "black, 25-liter ‘Ozark Trail Hiker Pack’ backpack," according to a post on X.
In a statement to PEOPLE on Thursday, Feb. 19, a spokesperson for the Pima County Sheriff's Department said investigators are looking into the possibility that the person may have had an accomplice.
"The sheriff has said all along that while investigators are working to identify the person seen on doorbell video, they are not ruling out that that was the only person involved," the spokesperson said.
A massive search for Nancy has been ongoing. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos publicly expressed his hope that “she is alive” and said that he “doesn’t have any evidence to prove she’s not,” according to the spokesperson.
