NEED TO KNOW

  • Bryson DeChambeau was born to parents Jon and Jan DeChambeau on Sept. 16, 1993
  • Jon was a golfer who worked as an operations director and youth coach at a California golf club
  • Jon died in 2022 from complications related to diabetes

Bryson DeChambeau continues to be inspired by his parents, Jon and Jan DeChambeau.

The golfer was born to Jon and Jan on Sept. 16, 1993. They also share a son named Garrett, and raised their family in Clovis, Calif. The couple remained married until Jon’s death in 2022 from complications related to diabetes.

According to Jan, Bryson takes after his late father, who was also a golfer.

“[Bryson is] steadfast. Once something is proved to him, he stands his ground. He gets that from his father. That old Dutch streak,” she told Golf Digest in September 2015, adding that he also inherited Jon’s “stubborness.”

Here’s everything to know about Bryson DeChambeau’s parents, Jan and Jon DeChambeau.

Jon was a pro golfer in the 1980s. The Arizona Open was his “one and only PGA Tour [event]” Bryson previously told Burger Boy Golf.

However, Jon remained a "golfer at heart," per Bryson, and began a decades-long career as a golf club operations director and youth coach. While overseeing the Riverbend Golf Club (which has since been renamed the Dragonfly Club) in the Fresno area, Jon ran fundraisers and taught golf across all skill levels.

“Everyone knew who he was and knew he had a lot of knowledge for the game,” Rae Ann Pifferini-Scheidt, a longtime friend of Jon’s, told The Fresno Bee following his death in 2022. “So they listened. And he was always passionate and competitive about golf.”

Jon and Jan welcomed two children. Their son, Bryson, was born on Sept. 16, 1993, in Modesto, Calif. They also share a son named Garrett.

Following his stint as a pro golfer, Jon stepped into a director role at the Riverbend Golf Club in 2002, per The Athletic. As a result, the family moved roughly 100 miles northwest to an agricultural town called Clovis when Bryson was in elementary school.

He went on to attend Clovis East High School, where he was a multi-sport athlete. He tried his hand at volleyball, soccer, basketball and tennis, before going all in on golf.

Bryson still has a very close connection to his hometown. During a January 2025 appearance on The Joe Pump Show, Bryson revealed that he’s in the process of building a “multisports complex center” that will make golf more “economically viable” and “accessible” to Fresno County residents.

“We have acquired massive amounts of land in my hometown, and it is a three-phase process to build a whole community and increase the size of where I grew up by 30%,” he said.

The Masters have a longstanding tradition of allowing family members to caddie for players during the Par 3 contest, and Jan had the honor of caddying for her son at the 2023 Masters.

She donned the infamous white caddy uniform, featuring a jumpsuit that had “DeChambeau” printed on the back and a green cap with the Masters insignia.

Jon died in November 2022 at the age of 63 from complications related to diabetes, according to NBC Sports.

Jon was first diagnosed with diabetes in the early 1990s and underwent dialysis treatment after suffering double kidney failure in 2014. He also had his left leg amputated as a result of the disease.

In 2015, Jon reconnected with a former high school golf teammate, who ended up donating a kidney to him in 2017.

“I would sit back and start thinking, ‘Wow, I’m going to live again and I’m going to get to follow Bryson when he’s playing on the Tour.’ Things that I thought were going away from me and never going to be a part of me again became alive again,” Jon told the Golf Channel in 2018 following his kidney transplant.

Jon ultimately died in November 2022 from complications related to the disease. Bryson announced his father’s passing in an emotional Instagram post.

“Im sad to see you go but you've been through way too much pain in this life,” he wrote alongside a carousel of family photos. “Now you get to be with me and watch me at every event I play.”

“I’ll see you in the next life,” he continued, adding that “life is short.” He encouraged followers to “take every moment you can with your family and say I love you.”

Bryson has talked about his father several times since his 2022 death. Following his win at the 2023 LIV Golf Greenbrier tournament — his first since Jon died — Bryson said in a post-match interview that his father was "with [him] all day."

In June 2024, Bryson competed in and won the U.S. Open, which took place on Father’s Day. He dedicated the victory to Jon.

“I want to say Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there,” he told reporters, per The Independent. “Unfortunately, my dad passed a couple of years ago, and this one is for him."

Bryson has also talked about how his dad inspires him to "just ... keep going," even amid losses.

“When you have moments in life that aren’t easy, it’s really nice to have had a father that can give you that perseverance and that wisdom to say, ‘Don’t quit. Don’t ever quit,’ " he said during a March 2026 press conference, per The Kansas City Star.

He echoed that sentiment in a March 2026 Instagram video, saying that Jon "taught him what winning truly is."

"When things weren't going well or my way, he'd tell me, 'Just keep swimming,' " he recalled. "At the time, it sounded really simple ... I get it now. Winning isn't about trophies or being perfect, because the moment you quit, is when you lose."

Jan serves as her family’s pillar of support.

In a March 2017 USA Today interview (via Golfweek), Bryson called Jan “a saint” for how she looked after the family during Jon’s health struggles. "My mom was a saint through it all, helping him get to certain places and do certain things," he recalled.

Following his win at the 2023 LIV Golf Greenbrier tournament, Bryson shouted out Jan, too, saying, “You are the best person that I could ever imagine parenting me and teaching me all the life lessons growing up."
