A Texas man celebrated his 100th birthday after defying the odds and overcoming stage 4 lung cancer.

In honor of June's National Cancer Survivor Month, Houston Methodist Hospital is celebrating local resident Cecil McConnell after he beat cancer.

McConnell was 96 when he started experiencing a persistent cough after a bout with COVID. He went to see a doctor and was later diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. The disease was located in his right lung and had already spread to his lymph nodes and pleural cavity.

“I first thought, so few make it to my age in the first place, so if it gets me, it gets me,” he told the hospital. “But I tried to focus on keeping a positive attitude and staying connected to my family and friends – maybe that's what contributed to my longevity.”

In January 2023, McConnell began treatment, undergoing immunotherapy followed by highly targeted radiation. Dr. Fadi Abu-Shahin, his oncologist at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, explained that stage 4 cancer is typically incurable, but there are rare exceptions.

McConnell finished treatment by February 2024 and his scans showed no signs of cancer. He's now been in remission for two years and recently celebrated his 100th birthday.

In honor of his special day, staff at Houston Methodist surprised McConnell with a celebration during his latest appointment. In a clip of the heartwarming moment, McConnell was all smiles as everyone sang Happy Birthday to him in a decorated room with a special cake.

“As physicians, medicine gives us moments we never forget,” Abu-Shahin said in a release. “While oncology is often perceived as challenging, it can also provide a chance to live these rewarding moments. Seeing a patient with advanced lung cancer thrive in remission for more than two years – and celebrate his 100th birthday – has been among the most memorable moments in my career. His journey is a powerful reminder that science and hope may together lead to outstanding outcomes.”

After surviving cancer and reaching the milestone birthday, McConnell is now offering advice to others who might be navigating the disease.

“Keep living your life and stay active,” he said. “Interaction with people is important in every phase of life – even when you're going through cancer. Keep hope and prayer, and by the grace of God you will recover.”
