NEED TO KNOW

  • Richard Gere almost quit Primal Fear due to struggles finding the right actor for a key role
  • Edward Norton, then an unknown actor, impressed Gere and the team during a last-minute audition
  • Norton’s performance earned him a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination for his film debut

Richard Gere almost didn’t make Primal Fear due to casting challenges.

In an interview with The Movie Podcast, Gere explained that they “couldn’t find an actor to play” Aaron Stampler, the 19-year-old altar boy who is accused of murder, and whom Gere’s character defends at trial pro bono.

Gere admitted that while the role was “incredible” and “all the big name young actors wanted to play that,” ultimately, “they did fine with the crazy part, but they weren’t believable as being normal.”

The Pretty Woman actor, 76, admitted that he was “ready to walk” — until one audition caught his eye.

“Because I said, ‘We can’t do it without an actor who can play that part, it won’t work.’ And the last second, there was an open call, and Nate, a casting director from New York, called us in L.A., and said, ‘This kid walked in. I think he’s really terrific.’ It was Ed [Norton].”

From there, Norton, then in his mid-20s, flew out and read with Gere, who noted that the young actor was “fabulous.”

“We all thought, ‘Wow, what has he done? Nothing.’ So we said we’d better test him again, maybe it was just a fluke, so we tested him again, and it was even better the second time,” Gere recalled. “He was, and is, that kind of extraordinary talent that he can be believable and lying at the same time.”

The 1996 crime thriller was Norton’s film debut, and ultimately earned him a Golden Globe, plus Best Supporting Actor nominations at the Oscars and BAFTAs.

At a screening of the movie in 2025, Norton, now 56, admitted that while he enjoyed making the movie, he would often sneak off the set to watch Mike Nichols direct another 1996 film, The Birdcage.

Mike Nichols was shooting The Birdcage on the stage next door. And I used to, when I realized that, I was obsessed with Mike’s work, and I would, in my prison uniform, I would sneak across the alley on our breaks and slip into the back of The Birdcage set so that I could watch Mike directing,” he recalled.

“It was an amazing way to... a lot of the old-school experience is harder to come by these days. I was really lucky that I got [it], that they were still doing premieres on the Paramount lot,” Norton added.
