A California dad celebrated his birthday by welcoming triplets

On Tuesday, Aug. 18, Nyla Craft and Marco Bernal welcomed a rare set of mixed triplets — Elio, Elias and Enzo — who were all conceived naturally and born full-term with no complications, officials at Kaiser Permanente South Bay Medical Center shared in a media release, per KTLA

Two of the brothers are identical, the third is their fraternal sibling, making them mixed triplets.

All three boys were born weighing a combined 19.3 lbs., just shy of breaking the Guinness World Record for heaviest (living) triplets at birth. The record of 22 lbs., 12.6 oz. belongs to Evan Patrick, Aiden Cole and Lilly Kathryn, who were born to Michelle Lee Wilson in Colorado in 2003.

The hospital explained of newborns Elio, Elias and Enzo, “[That’s] a remarkably healthy start for triplets,” adding that it took more than a dozen doctors and nurses from multiple specialties to safely deliver the triplets and care for their mother.

Fraternal triplets can occur when a mother produces and releases three eggs at ovulation and all three eggs are fertilized by sperm, according to the Cleveland Clinic. A fertilized egg can also split into three fertilized eggs resulting in identical triplets.

“When I heard the first baby come out, I cried because I was just, ‘Oh my gosh … he’s okay,’ ” Craft told CBS News as Bernal sat nearby with a baby resting on each arm.

The mother continued, “Then the second one then the third one, and I was just like, I heard them all crying at once, and I was like, ‘Oh thank God, they are good.’ ”

The triplets join their two older siblings, making Craft and Bernal parents to five children under the age of 5.

“We’re just so happy,” Dr. Rohit Passi, the hospital’s chief of neonatology, told CBS News as he visited the family of seven at their Southern California home. “This is the best part, just seeing them out and sitting with the family.”

He added, “This is the reason we do what we do.”
