NEED TO KNOW
- Meghan Presson’s dad sought her advice on modern dating etiquette after years away from the dating scene
- Presson shared her dad’s sweet text on TikTok, where it went viral and received overwhelmingly positive reactions
- She credits her dad’s unconditional love for shaping her expectations of how men should treat her
Meghan Presson has always had a good relationship with her dad.
While the Los Angeles resident has turned to him for help countless times over the years, she recently opened her phone and saw he was the one who needed help this time around, specifically when it came to modern dating.
“My dad had mentioned he was interested in this woman and wanted to ask her out," Presson, 35, shares with PEOPLE. "He's in his 60s and hasn't dated in quite a few years, so he wasn't sure what the expectations of today's dating etiquette are."
In the text message, her dad wrote, “Good morning, I'm not sure of the proper etiquette in today's dating standards. Should I call her or text her regarding times?”
She shares that her father does ask her for dating advice at times, but it's “rare” as “he doesn't date much.”

Given its rarity, Presson says she “loved” seeing the message from her dad — and also loved that he sent her a photo of his outfit for the date beforehand, too.
“I love being able to give advice and that he trusts my answers," she says.
While the date went well and he hopes to see the woman again, Presson notes that, when it comes to her dad's dating life, "he doesn't really have one."
"He's not actively dating. He drives cross-country and takes care of my grandparents as well," she explains. "But when he does ask me about dating advice, I always try to come at it with the perspective of 'what would I want' or 'how do I want to be treated.' "
Touched by her dad's message, Presson recently shared it on TikTok since she “thought it was honestly just so sweet and innocent.”
She hopes it served as a reminder for people to "try to do the right thing" and be kind when it comes to dating, especially those dating slightly later in life, as putting yourself back out there can be nerve-racking.
"People have been overwhelmingly kind in the comments and super supportive!” Presson says.
One of the things that surprised her the most after the video went viral was “the kindness of strangers.”

“Sometimes I feel like TikTok comments can be a negative space. However, I'm not shocked it's gotten so many likes. I think in general, people want to root for others going through the same struggles.”
While Presson has taught her dad a lot about modern dating, he has also shaped how she shows up in the world.
“He just loves me, unconditionally," Presson shares when asked her favorite thing about her dad. “I expect all men to treat me the way he does. He makes an effort to call, text [and] get dinner together.”
