An Oregon man who prosecutors say broke into a family’s home and attempted to rape a woman as she held her infant child has been sentenced to 22 years in prison.

Judson Defir, 43, was sentenced on June 18 after Multnomah County Circuit Judge Celia Howes found him guilty of first-degree kidnapping, attempted first-degree rape, three counts of first-degree sexual abuse, attempted first-degree sexual abuse, public indecency and recklessly endangering another person, according to a press release from the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office.

The charges stem from a March 15 crime spree in southeast Portland that prosecutors said targeted four women.

According to the district attorney's office, Defir first entered a church and forcibly grabbed a woman’s breast while she attended services with her children. Her scream alerted the congregation and he fled, per the release.

A short time later, prosecutors said, Defir entered a nearby home where a mother was caring for her 10-month-old and 3-year-old children while her husband worked outside in the yard.

The woman later told police she was upstairs with her children when she heard someone enter the home and walk up the stairs saying, “Honey I’m here,” according to the release. She quickly realized it was not her husband’s voice and saw an unknown man standing in the bedroom doorway.

The man, later identified as Defir, grabbed the woman while she was holding her baby and pulled her across the hallway into a guest bedroom, prosecutors said.

As she fought back, Defir allegedly forced her onto a bed and began pulling down her sweatpants while she remained clutching the infant, according to the release. Prosecutors said the pressure from Defir’s body caused the woman to press down on the baby she was holding.

When Defir briefly loosened his grip, the woman escaped, per prosecutors. She placed the baby in a crib, grabbed her older child and barricaded herself inside a bedroom with a bookshelf as Defir allegedly attempted to force his way inside.

The woman then ran onto a balcony and screamed for help, alerting her husband. Her husband and multiple people from the nearby church rushed to help, causing Defir to flee, according to the release.

After leaving the home, Defir sexually assaulted another woman by grabbing her genitals as she walked down the street, prosecutors said, alleging that he then attempted to grab a fourth woman and exposed himself in public.

Police responding to the area found about 15 people following and pointing at Defir, and he was arrested shortly afterward, the release states.

“Through his actions, the defendant absolutely devastated four women, their families and an entire close-knit and wonderful community on March 15,” Senior Deputy District Attorney Melissa Marrero said in a statement. “This resolution ensures accountability for the defendant, long-term safety for the victims and finality following what can be a very difficult court process.”

Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez also praised the victims following the sentencing.

“It brings a measure of justice and protection to the community,” Vasquez said. “And I’m just in awe of the victims and their strength. The way that the victims came together and supported each other was incredible.”
