The ‘Totally 90s House’ star is opening up about his ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ co-star’s quiet acts of kindness before his death in 2019

Brian Austin Green is reminiscing about the quiet ways his Beverly Hills, 90210 costar Luke Perry showed up for friends, neighbors, and even complete strangers before his death in 2019.
The Totally 90s House star, 53, opens up about the late actor in a PEOPLE exclusive clip from the Aug. 26 episode of the Really Famous with Kara Mayer Robison podcast (above). During their chat, the host asked who “understood” Green throughout his career, to which he responded “funny enough, Luke Perry.”
“Luke was an interesting one for me to watch,” Green says. “He wasn’t concerned with people’s opinions of him.” It wasn’t until after Green started to experience “stroke-like symptoms” caused by his diet that, he says, he understood why “I loved him so much.”

Perry died at the age of 52 on March 4, 2019, just five days after experiencing a massive stroke. Following his death, Green recalled sitting around with his family, including his kids — Jack, 29 and Sophie, 26 — and his ex-wife, Rachel “Minnie” Sharp. During that time, the group recounted stories Perry “never told anybody about.”
One simple habit exemplified the actor’s instinct to be of service to others.
“Every time he flew on a plane, he would have balloons in his pockets so when he would hear a kid crying on the plane, he’d blow up a balloon and he’d walk it to them because it would comfort them in some way,” Green says.

Green shares some other examples of his friend’s giving nature. “Someone was sick in the hospital across the country and he would get on a plane and he would fly to the hospital and sit with them and share with them and have these great connections with them, fly home and never tell a soul,” Green adds. “He didn’t do it for the perception of ‘Oh, what a great guy, doing that.’ ”
The random acts of kindness also extended to Perry’s neighbors. “He had a neighbor that lived down the street that was wheel-chair bound and he needed a new wheel. So Luke went and bought him one,” Green says. “You’d move into a new house and he would come by and he’d go, ‘You need a better fence.’”
Green clarifies: “He wouldn’t say that to you, he’d think in his mind, ‘He needs a better fence in his backyard,’ and then he’d show up two weeks later knocking at your door and he would have a pile of wood and he would spend the day building a fence.”
While Green was never the recipient of a new fence, he says Perry did build one for their costar Ian Ziering.

“He would just do those things,” Green says. “That was who he was.”
Green and Perry starred alongside one another on the hit Fox series, in which Green portrayed the aspiring musician David Silver while Perry starred as the rebellious Dylan McKay, for 10 years from 1990 to 2000.
